"I became a teacher to make a difference, but I couldn't afford to live in the community where I taught. The EBC Homes Program made it possible for me to live where I serve."
Linda taught third grade at an elementary school in an affluent community but couldn't afford to live there on her teacher's salary. She commuted 90 minutes each way from a more affordable area, leaving little time for lesson planning or connecting with her students' families.
"I loved my students and the school community, but the commute was exhausting. I was spending three hours a day in traffic and couldn't participate in after-school events or parent meetings."
The school district partnered with the EBC Homes Program to create affordable housing options for teachers and other essential workers. Linda was among the first to apply for the teacher housing initiative.
"When I heard about housing specifically for teachers in our district, I couldn't believe it. It seemed too good to be true, but the program staff walked me through every step."
Through the program, Linda secured a two-bedroom townhouse just 10 minutes from her school. The affordable rent allowed her to save money while being fully present in her school community.
"Now I can stay after school to help struggling students, attend evening school board meetings, and even run into my students' families at the grocery store. I'm truly part of this community now."
With stable, affordable housing near her workplace, Linda has become more involved in curriculum development and mentoring new teachers. She's also pursuing her master's degree in education administration.
