"After years of renting and worrying about rising costs, we finally found stability and a place to truly call home."
David, a construction worker, and his wife Sarah worked with our homeownership team in 2016 for our Below Market Purchase (BMP) program we administer for the city of Santa Clara. We caught up with them in 2018 – two years after they moved in, and they both expressed joy at living in a place where they don't have to worry about the rent going up or the owner of the property saying they have to move.
Regular dinners with Sarah's parents, who live in nearby San Jose, was also a great draw for the two of them. David told us at the time that they "hoped to have kids in our house one day."
Two years after that, we caught up with them again – and got to meet their daughter, Emma, just a few weeks shy of her first birthday. Living in Santa Clara means the family is close to Sarah's parents and sister who help watch the baby during the day while Sarah works as a nurse.
Emma enjoys rides in her stroller in the nearby park with her parents – where the family has been able to go for the 4th of July and Christmas tree lighting events and just for fun.
Two months later, we checked in with them as COVID-19 and the Shelter in Place order disrupted their lives, and they're adjusting. David is fortunate he is able to work from home on construction planning, and Sarah continued her essential work at the hospital.
Sarah still found it challenging to balance work with a 14-month-old at home, but they felt they were getting a good balance. "It's easier to be stuck in your house when you love it so much," David told us.
Today, David and Sarah's family continues to thrive in their Santa Clara home. The stability of homeownership has allowed them to focus on what matters most – raising their daughter, building community connections, and planning for the future without the constant worry of housing insecurity.
